Constipation

Constipation is common and it affects people of all ages with studies suggesting that 20% of the population currently struggle with achieving a regular bowel movement.  You can usually treat it at home with simple changes to your diet and lifestyle.

It’s likely to be constipation if:

  • you have not had a poo at least 3 times in a week
  • the poo is often difficult to push out and larger than usual
  • the poo is often dry, hard or lumpy
  • You may also have a stomach ache and feel bloated or sick.

Causes of constipation

Constipation in adults has many possible causes. Sometimes there’s no obvious reason.

The most common causes include:

  • not eating enough fibre – such as fruit, vegetables and cereals
  • not drinking enough fluids
  • not moving enough and spending long periods sitting or lying in bed
  • being less active and not exercising
  • often ignoring the urge to go to the toilet
  • changing your diet or daily routine
  • a side effect of medicine
  • stress, anxiety or depression
  • during pregnancy and for 6 weeks after giving birth.
  • You may experience faecal leakage as a result of constipation – liquid stool builds up behind the dry constipated stool.

Seek help

If changes to diet and lifestyle do not improve symptoms of constipation and you have tried oral medication, your Health Care Professional may suggest that Aquaflush Trans Anal Irrigation could help you to achieve regular emptying of your bowel.

Renew Medical UK would recommend that you seek support from your GP or local continence advisory service who will be able to assess your symptoms and offer options for ongoing management and treatment.
